Forest Management
Forests act as both peaceful sanctuaries and dynamic communities that provide critical food and habitat for native wildlife while purifying air and water, regulating temperature, and storing carbon. Acting on our mission to manage properties to support biodiversity, we are committed to fulfilling our clients’ requests while focusing on restoring and caring for their forest ecosystems.
Because each forest is unique, each Management Plan could include any combination of the following practices:
-
Cataloging existing plant life. During site visits, Deborah will take stock of native and non-native species growing in your forest to determine which type of forest habitat(s) are present. This helps us understand what we might expect to find.
-
Invasive species management. Our team will use a strategic combination of equipment and handwork to remove invasive species in target areas. Following removal, a management plan will be implemented to monitor and maintain these areas.
-
Plant Health Care. If pests and disease are suspected or observed on the plants in your forest, our Plant Health Care Specialist will use in-house and outside laboratory analysis to determine key factors affecting your plant's health, from disease, pests, to inadequate soil. Following diagnosis, we offer soil remediation, pesticide applications, and stewardship services. Learn more here!
-
Protecting young native trees and shrubs. Where deer pressure is strong we set up ‘deer exclosures’, which are fences that withstand a forest environment. These fences protect young shrubs and saplings so they can spread seed, and regenerate areas where they have been heavily browsed.
-
Installing native plant material. In addition to protecting the existing native trees and shrubs, we also install supplemental native trees and shrubs that are found in the existing forest habitat. These new plantings create a network of root systems that competes with those of invasive species and as they mature their canopies help to shade them out.
-
Experience the forest. We want you to experience your forest and will help locate viewing areas or other points of interest within your forest. Whether it be a wooden or stone bench or a more developed sitting area, we will work with you to create a retreat where you can enjoy the beauty and serenity of your forest.
